Kunjarani Devi Biography

Kunjarani Devi is an Indian weightlifter who has won a number of medals in national and international weightlifting competitions. She was born on 1st March 1968 in Kairang Mayai Leikai in Imphal in Manipur. She took an interest in sports from her younger days.

 

She studied at Sindam Sinshang Resident High School in Imphal and got her graduation from Maharaja Bodha Chandra College in Imphal. She gave much importance to weightlifting since her younger days. She is serving as an assistant commandant in the Central Reserve Police Force. She has participated in a number of police championships and she served as the captain of the Indian Police team from the year 1996 to 1998.

 

She started her medal hunt from 1985 in the National Weightlifting Championships in 44 kg, 46 kg and 48 kg category and made two new National Records in the year 1987 in the event held at Thiruvananthapuram. She won a gold medal in Pune in the year 1994. In the event held at Manipur in 1998, she contested in the 48 kg category and could win only silver medal.

 

In 1989 she got her first World Women’s Weightlifting Championship held in Manchester. She was motivated by the three silver medals that she won in the event. She set a record by participating in the world champions for seven times continuously except the one held in Melbourne in the year 1993. She was able to win at least one medal in each of the competitions that she participated. However she could not get on to the top by grabbing gold medal and had to be satisfied with the silver medals.

 

She took part in the Asian games held at Beijing in 1990 and the event held at Hiroshima in the year 1994. However she could not get any medal in the Asian Games held at Bangkok in 1998. She settled with one silver and two bronze medals in the sports held at Shangai in 1989 and went on to win three silver medals in Indonesia in 1991. She won the gold medal at the 2006 Commonwealth Games at Melbourne in 48 kg category.

 

She was accused of using anabolic steroids in 2001 and suspended for six months. She received Arjuna Award in 1990 and Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award with Leander Paes in 1996-1997. She also won K. K. Birla Sports award.
