Kumar Mangalam Birla Biography

Kumar Mangalam Birla is an Indian businessman, executive, industrialist and currently serves as the Chairman of the Aditya Birla Group. He is also the Chancellor of the Birla Institute of Technology & Science. In 1995 Kumar Birla inherited the Aditya Birla Group, India’s leading commodities conglomerate named after his late father and he belongs to the fourth generation of famous business family – Birla. This multinational company worth US $40 billion and operates in 36 countries. 50% of its revenue comes from other nations and this organization is spread in 6 continents globally. He is the chairman of most of its companies India as well as abroad.

 

He was born on 14 June 1967 and his childhood days were spent in Kolkata. Birla family originally belongs to Rajasthan. After graduation he completed Chartered Accountant from Institute of Chartered Accountants of India and also MBA from London Business School, London. He took power of the Birla Empire in 1995 after the death of his father Aditya Birla. He was only 28 year old then. Though it was doubted if could handle the whole empire with his less experience, he proved it wrong and his brain was behind the Aditya Birla Group to make it India’s number one commodities conglomerate organization.

 

Though began with textiles, fertilizers, cement etc, the group has expanded to Telecom, Software, BPO and many new business concerns. From $2 billion turnover industry, through his efforts Kumar Mangalam has expanded it to $40 billion industry. More than 130,000 people are employed in the industry that spread to 36 countries. Birla is married to Neerja Birla and the couple has three children.
