Kulbhushan Kharbanda Biography

Kulbhushan Kharbanda is a veteran and talented actor of Bollywood. He has handled both character roles as well as villain’s role. His most memorable role is Shakal of Amitabh Bachchan – Sashi Kapoor starrer ‘Shaan’ released in the year 1980. He started his dream career as a theatre artist during 60’s and later moved to movies during the era of 1970’s. His debut movie was Sai Paranjpye's Jadu Ka Shankh in 1974 and throughout 70’s he has done significant work in parallel cinema. Later on during 80’s he moved to commercial movies as well. He has worked in all the three movies of Deepa Mehta – Earth, Fire and Water and has also played his part well in milestone movies of Mahesh Bhatt’s career – Arth and Ek chadar se maili si.

 

Born in Hassanabdal, Attock District, Kulbhushan Kharbanda’s family moved to India after partition. Kulbhushan Kharbanda did his schooling at Jodhpur, Dehradoon, Aligarh & Delhi and later completed his graduation from Karorimal College, Delhi University. He was interested in theatres during his college days and after his studies along with a group of college friends, he formed a theatre group called "Abhiyaan". He later worked in Delhi-based Yatrik, a bilingual theatre repertory founded by director Joy Michael. He became its first paid artist as well.

 

He entered movies with Jadu Ka Shankh in 1974. But it was through Shyam Benegal's Nishaant (1974) that he got noticed first. He has also worked in many milestone movies of Shyam Benegal including Manthan (1976) Bhumika: The Role (1977), Junoon (1978) and Kalyug (1980). He has also worked in the movie Godhuli directed by B.V.Karanth. From 80’s onwards he entered mainstream movies and worked in many commercial projects.

 

His other significant movies till now include – Lagaan (2001), Utsav (1984), Ghayal (1990), Chakra (1981), Monsoon wedding (2001), Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar (1992), Solva Saawan (1979), Ram Teri Ganga Maili (1985), Force (2012), Jodha Akbar (2008), Gupt (1997), Border (1997), Naseem (1995), Yes Boss (1997), Mandi (1983), Andhi Gali (1984), Trikal (1985), Junoon (1979), Premrog (1983), Shakti (1982) and Susman (1987) and Refugee (2000). He has been nominated for Filmfare best actor in supporting role for the movie, Ghulami in 1986.
