Kshetresa Chandra Chattopadhyaya Biography

Kshetresa Chandra Chattopadhyaya was a distinguished Sanskrit scholar from Bengal who lived during the period 1896–1974. Veda, Grammar, Pali, Prakrit and Philology are other subjects in which he was proficient of. He and famous writer Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay belonged to the same illustrious family of Kulina Brahmans of Deshmukho in District Hooghly. He also had numerous disciples who excelled in different subjects, of whom scholars like B P T Vagish Shastri, Vidya Niwas Mishra, Govind Chandra Pande, Govardhan Rai and Kamlesh Dutt Tripathi need special mention. He was also associated with All India Oriental Conference since 1924. He was honoured with Certificate of Merit by President of India in 1966.

 

He was born on 27 October 1896 in Nimta of North 24 Parganas. After completing intermediate from Kolkata in 1915, he moved to Agra where he completed graduation. He also took M.A. in Sanskrit from Queen’s College, Benares. He completed MA in Veda and Vedanta in the following years. Great leader Subhas Chandra Bose was his college mate. Soon after studies, he joined University of Allahabad as a lecturer of Sanskrit in 1924. In 1950 he was promoted to reader and finally in 1956 he became Sanskrit professor.

 

He became Director of Research Institute at Sampurnanand Sanskrit University, Benares where he guided students in research. He also served as an editor for a few works like Sarasvati Bhavana Granthamala and Sanskrit Journal, Sarasvati Susama. Eshakenopanishad (1992), Vedavittaprakasika (1966) and Studies in Vedic and Indo-Iranian Religion and Literature (1976) are the books authored by him. Apart from his contribution as an academician, editor and writer, he has also presided over many conferences across India. He passed away in 1974.
