Kristo Das Pal Biography

Kristo Das Pal was a journalist, orator and the editor of Hindu Patriot from Kolkata, West Bengal. Though born in a lower caste Hindu family, when caste system and its discrimination was prominent in Indian society, he rose to be one of the important persons of his age. He lived in the 19th century during the period, 1838 to 1884. He lived a short span of only 46 years, yet became one the figurative personalities of British Bengal. In 1861 he was appointed assistant secretary to the British Indian Association, a board of Bengal landlords and later he served as its secretary. He was one of the patrons of Hindu Mela.

 

He was born in the year 1838 as the son of Ishwar Chandra Pal. He received an English education at the Oriental Seminary and the Hindu Metropolitan College. He joined journalism at a younger age. He became the editor of the Hindu Patriot, originally started in 1853. He remained in that position until the unfortunate death of its owner, Harish Chandra Mukherjee in 1861. Same year he was appointed as the assistant secretary to the British Indian Association. Kaliprasanna Singha bought the Hindu Patriot magazine and saved it from extinction and later it became a part of a trust. Kristo Das Pal remained its editor for long 23 years proving his talent and abilities.

 

In 1863 he was appointed justice of the peace and municipal commissioner of Kolkata. In 1872 he was made a member of the Bengal legislative council for which he got anonymous appreciation. He opposed Calcutta Municipal Bill of 1876. In 1878 he received the decoration of C.I.E. In 1883 he was appointed a member of the viceroy’s legislative council. He died on the 24th of July 1884 from diabetes.
