Krishna Tirath Biography

Krishna Tirath is a senior politician associated with Bharatiya Janata Party. Prior to her entry to BJP in January 2015, she was associated with Indian National Congress since 1980s. A former parliamentarian, she was elected to Lok Sabha as a Congress candidate in 2004 and 2009 general assembly elections. She served as Minister for Women and Child Development in Manmohan Singh’s cabinet during his second term as prime minister. She is a prominent political figure of Delhi state politics too. She served as an MLA from Delhi during 1984–2004, and has served as a cabinet minister under Sheila Dikshit in 1998. She was given the portfolio Social Welfare, SC & ST and Labour & Employment. In 2003 she served as the Deputy Speaker of the Delhi Assembly.

 

She hails from Karol Bagh, New Delhi. She was born on 3 March 1955. She is married to Vijaya Kumar and the couple has three daughters. She is active in state politics since early 1980s, and has become the member of Delhi state legislature for the first time in 1984. Since then she served as an MLA of Delhi till 2004. After that she became active in national level politics. She reached parliament for the first time in 2004 Lok Sabha elections, and retained her seat in 2009 assembly elections too. During her second term as MP, she served as Minister for Women and Child Development.

 

During her tenure as cabinet minister she put forward an idea that working Indian husbands should pay a portion of their income to their wives. It opened many discussions nationwide. She proposed this idea as a part of women empowerment in India. She invited controversies, when her daughter Yashvi Tirath was appointed as anchor in state run telecaster Doordarshan News. In 2015 she quit congress and joined BJP. In 2015 state assembly elections she contested as BJP candidate and was defeated by Hazari Lal Chauhan of AAP by a huge margin.
