Krishna Singh Biography

Krishna Singh was a famous politician belonging to Indian national congress and was the first Chief Minister of Bihar. Along with the nationalists - Rajendra Prasad and Anugrah Narayan Sinha, he is regarded as the "Architects of Modern Bihar". He was the first Indian chief minister who abolished feudalism. He served as the chief minister of Bihar provinces from 1946 to 1961 until his death. He was also a social activist who led Dalit Hindus to Vaidyanath Temple, Deoghar for the first time. He was addressed as "Bihar Kesari" by his followers.  He held a good relationship with India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and their exchange of letters were published by Pratibha Patil, complied as a book titled – ‘Freedom and Beyond’.

 

He was born in 1887 in Khanwa in Nawada district of Bihar. Both his parents were very religious. He lost his mother at the age of 5. After schooling at his village school and Zila School in Munger, his college studies were completed at Patna. After completing graduation and LLB, he started practising as a lawyer from Munger in 1915. The following year he met Mahatma Gandhi for the first time and took vows to work for free India. He gave up practising law in 1921 and participated in Non-cooperation movement. In 1922 he got arrested. He was released one year later.

 

He became member of All India Congress Committee and took active entry to politics. After serving many honorable positions in state politics, he became the Premier of Bihar province in 1937 and formed his cabinet at Patna. But he disagreed with the governor on the issue of the release of political prisoners and resigned. Later he became the first chief minister of Bihar and continued the position till his death.
