Kris Gopalakrishnan Biography

Kris Gopalakrishnan is an iconic figure of Indian private sector, particularly Information Technology. He was one of the architects behind Infosys, the leading IT firm of India. He is one among the 7 founders of the organization during 1980’s, when IT was not at all developed in India. He has served as the co-chairman of Infosys and now serves as its executive vice chairman. He was elected as the President of India's apex industry chamber 'Confederaton of Indian Industry' for the year 2013-14. Kris is the chairman of the International Institute of Information Technology, Bangalore and vice chairman of the Board for Information Technology Education Standards (BITES), Karnataka. He is a Trustee of the Infosys Science Foundation and a member of ACM, IEEE and IEEE Computer Society.

 

Kris Gopalakrishnan was born in Thiruvananthapuram on April 5, 1955. His schooling was done at Government Model Boys Higher Secondary School, Thycaud in the heart of the city. He completed graduation in physics in 1977 and M. Tech. (Computer Science) in 1979, both from IIT, Chennai. In 1979 he started his career as a software engineer with Patni Computers, Mumbai. In 1981, Gopalakrishnan co-founded Infosys with six other entrepreneurs.

 

Design management, development, implementation and support of information systems for clients in the U.S were his prime areas of tasks during the formation years of Infosys. He headed the technical operations of KSA/Infosys during the period - 1987 to 1994. Since 2002, he served as the Chief Operating Officer. In 2007, Kris took over as CEO and Managing Director of Infosys Technologies Limited from Nandan Nilekani. In 2011, he handed over the responsibility of CEO and MD to one of its co-founders, S D Shibulal.
