Kirit Khan Biography

Kirit Khan was a talented sitar artist born in the family of Allauddin Khan, the most reputed Maestro of Seni-Maihar and Alauddin Gharana of Hindustani Classical Music. He was born as the son of Bahadur Khan, nephew of the Sarode legend Ustad Alauddin Khan and cousin of Ustad Ali Akbar Khan and Annapurna Devi. Ustad Abed Hossain Khan and Ustad Mobarak Hossain Khan- the famous Sarod and Sitar maestros from Bangladesh are his uncles (brothers of Bahadur Khan). His elder brother Bidyut Khan was also a reputed sitar player. He became infamous when he was arrested and convicted in 2005 for taking money from musicians in the pretext of enhancing their career by arranging music concerts abroad. One year later he died prematurely due to kidney failure.

 

He was born on October 29, 1955 in Comilla of present Bangladesh and later settled at Kolkata, India. He learnt first lessons of music from his father. He started with tabla and later learnt sitar. He acquired sheer virtuosity in his fingers under the strict studies of his father. He learnt music from his father till his death happened in 1989. A duet performance with his father in the 'Sursringer Music Conference' in Mumbai in 1986 is still regarded as one of his most memorable performances. In 1991 he was highly appreciated at the 'Surdas Music Conference' in Kolkata and has received appreciation for his concerts across India.

 

Since 1978, he toured abroad. Russia, Cuba, England and Germany are among those countries in which he conducted concerts. In 1984 he obtained the title Suramani from the ‘Haridas Music Conference’. He also received Surjhankar title from Mumbai. After working as an assistant director of his father, he has given music for movies like Nilkanya.
