Kiran Ahluwalia Biography

Kiran Ahluwalia is an Indo-Canadian singer specialized in Persian and Punjabi Ghazals. A music arranger too, she performs across the globe popularizing Punjabi music. She is married to popular Pakistani singer-composer, Rez Abbasi and is currently settled in New York. She was born in Patna. She made her singing debut in the year 2002 and received 'Newcomer' award at the inaugural Songlines Music Awards (2009) based on US. Her fine and husky voice has been well appreciated by music lovers.

 

Her album releases include - Kashish — Attraction (2000), Beyond Boundaries (2003), Kiran Ahluwalia (2005), Wanderlust (2007), Aam Zameen - Common Ground (2011) and Sanata : Stillness (2014). She is a multiple winner of Juno Musical awards for her albums.  Her 2011 muiscal album, Aam Zameen - Common Ground bagged Canadian Folk Musi Award - Best World Solo Artist, apart from Juno Award for World Music Album of the Year. She used Portuguese fado musicians on three tracks for her fourth album, Wanderlust.

 

Kiran Ahluwalia was born in Patna, India. She started learning music and ghazals from her parents. She was brought up in India. In between she lived in New Zealand for a while before she returned back with parents. Her father bought a reel-to-reel tape player from Hong Kong and she used to listen to Indian music with that tape player. She also loved Bollywood music and heard it on radio. If interested in some song, her mother would write down the lyrics and later she learns it. She started learning classical music at the age of 7. After pursing her MBA degree, she worked as a bond trader in Toronto for a while. But she couldn’t find interest in that job and quit. Later she dedicated her full time to music.
