Keshab Chandra Sen Biography

Keshab Chandra Sen, also credited as Keshub Chunder Sen was a Bengali Hindu philosopher and social reformer from Kolkata. He is known for attempting to incorporate Christian theology within the framework of Hindu ideologies. He became a member of the Brahmo Samaj in 1856 and 10 years later in 1866, founded "Brahmo Samaj of India". But in 1878 his followers abandoned him when he conducted child marriage of his own daughter. Later he got attracted to ideologies of Ramakrishna and founded a syncretic "New Dispensation" which included Christianity, Vaishnav bhakti, and Hindu practices. He was a friend of Rabindranath Tagore. Naina Devi, a noted Hindustani vocalist is his granddaughter.

 

Keshub Chandra Sen was born on 19 November 1838 in Kolkata. His grandfather was Ramkamal Sen, a well-known pro-sati Hindu activist and lifelong opponent of Ram Mohan Roy. Sen lost his father at a younger age and he was brought up by his uncle. He attended the Bengali Patshala elementary school and later studied at Hindu Metropolitan College in 1845. In 1855 he founded an evening school for the children of working men and it functioned for next three years. In 1855, he became Secretary to the Goodwill Fraternity, a Masonic lodge which initiated his association with a Christian missionary Rev. James Long who also helped Sen establish a "British Indian Association". He was attracted to Brahma Samaj almost the same time.

 

In 1854, he served as Secretary of the Asiatic Society for a brief period followed by clerical job in the Bank of Bengal. But he resigned his job to fully dedicate his time in writings. He was married to Jagonmohini Sen with whom he had 10 children. He was attracted towards mysticism and spiritual teaching of the Indian philosophies.
