Kaushiki Chakrabarty Biography

Kaushiki Chakrabarty is an Indian classical vocalist of Hindustani music from Bengal. She is one of the prominent musicians of Bengal in the recent times. She is the daughter of renowned classical singer Ajoy Chakraborty who taught her early lessons of music. She has conducted many live concerts alongside her father. She also hosts "Gaan-Golpo ar Gaan", a weekly talk show with singers in the Bengali channel - Ruposhi Bangla, in which celebrity singers and musicians of Bangla film industry regularly appear as guests. She has also sung for a few Bengali movies, based on classical or Rabindra Sangeet.

 

She was born in Kolkata in the year 1980 to Ajoy Chakraborty and Chandana Chakraborty. She started identifying ragas at the age of 2. After gaining initial training in singing from her father, she studied under Pandit Jnan Prakash Ghosh and also studied from ITC Sangeet Research Academy. Her schooling and college studies were completed at Kolkata itself. She started doing concerts abroad at the ahe of 15. During school studies, she was not at all an intelligent student and she used to receive low marks. But later she topped Calcutta University in Philosophy and then topped Jadavpur University for Post-graduation.

 

During the initial stage of her career, she could freely sing only thumris and light classical music. She performed at Dover Lane Music Conference at the age of 20. Her father has helped a lot in grooming her career. She occasionally sings for movies as well. ‘Chillenra Chillenra’ of Thirumanam Ennum Nikkah and 4 songs from Shunyo Awnko composed by Tagore, Kamal Dasgupta and Gautam Ghose are her most recent songs.
