Kasthuri Biography

Kasthuri is a noted film actress of south Indian cinema who has been most active in the era of 1990’s. She has been one of the top rated heroines of 1990’s and worked predominantly in Tamil. She owns numerous hit movies in the 1990’s like -  Senthamizh Pattu opposite Prabhu and comedy blockbuster - Aniyan Bava Chetan Bava opposite Jayaram. During 2000’s she moved towards character roles and has also done cameo appearances in a few movies. She has been a model and has hosted many television shows as well.

Kasthuri was born in Chennai as Shannmathi on 1 May 1974. She started modelling during her school days at Chennai. Successful modelling career gave her film roles at a young age. She debuted as heroine in the Tamil film Aatha Un Koyiley in 1991. Very soon she shot to fame and appeared with all leading stars of Tamil industry. Rasathi Varum Naal, Government Mappilai, Chinnavarand Senthamizh Paatu placed her name in the top slot during the first half of 1990’s. She played the role of Kamal Hassan’s (double role) daughter and sister in 1996 National award winning film – Indian which was dubbed to other languages with name Hindustani, Bharatheeyudu etc.

But with mid 1990’s, her career started dragging down and she moved towards Malayalam. Aniyan Bava Chetan Bava opposite Jayaram released in 1995 was one of the most successful movies of her acting career. This comedy movie is regarded as a classic. Chakravarthy, Agarajan, Sheham, Pancha Pandavar and Mangalya Pallakku are her other Malayalam movies. In 2003, she appeared in one Hindi short film - The Bypass. She has been a basketball player and horse rider during her younger days. She made a comeback to Tamil cinema through an item song of 2010 movie - Thamizh Padam.
