Karthika Biography

If you choose 5 best faces among the actresses of Malayalam during middle 80’s, no doubt Karthika will be counted in that category. Her simple look, the easiness to portray both village girl and modern girl roles placed her as one among the most sought heroines of 80’s. When she left the film filed after marriage at the late 80’s, she was at the peak of her career with a few hits like Thalavattom in her kitty. Her natural charm with less make up, killing smile and different experiments with hair style made her popular. She vanished forever from Indian screen and can be counted one among the missing celebrities who have never shown face in the media later.

She entered Malayalam movie field as a junior artist for the song picturisation of the movie Oru painkili kadha. Director cum script writer, Balachandra Menon noted her and casted her as heroine for his next directorial venture Manicheppu Thurannappol. Then she acted in a few movies, of which majority belong to Mohan lal. Best romantic movies of Mohanlal’s early career have Karthika as a factor. Their amazing combination gave a few hits. Thalavattam, January Ororma, Gandhinagar Second Street, Ente Entethu Mathram, Sanmanassullavarkku Samadhanam, Ivide Ellavarkkum Sugham, Unnikale Oru Kadha Parayam and a few more movies were born in this combination. Her major hits have Mohanlal as co-star.

She acted as a dancer in Idanazhiyil oru kaalocha; its song ‘Vaathil pazhuthiloode’ is counted as one among the 10 best ever green romantic songs of Malayalam. Same is the case of Arike song from Nee ethra dhanya. Songs of Thalavattam are very melodious too.  A few of her movies were remade to Hindi by Priyadarshan. Thalavattom was remade as ‘Kyon ki’ where Karthika played the role of a doctor and Sanmanassullavarkku Samadhanam as Yeh tera ghar yeh mera ghar. Mohan lal was the co-actor in both these movies.

She has acted in a couple of Tamil movies also. Tamil version of God father – Nayakan of Kamal Hassan and Poovizhi Vasalile; both released in 1987. Her acting career ended in 5 years. Avanikunnile Kinnari Pookkal was her last movie and with her marriage, she left the industry forever.
