Karibasavaiah Biography

Karibasavaiah was a noted film and theatre personality associated with Kannada entertainment industry.  He excelled in comic roles. Made his noted presence in more than 120 films in different kind of roles, he passed away in 2012 after a road traffic accident in Bangalore. He was only 52. He was returning home after completing the shooting for the film Breaking News when he met with the accident on January 31, 2012. He died three days later. Mungarina Minchu, Galate Aliyandru, Yaarige Salute Sambala, Kotreshi Kanasu, Janumada Jodi, Police Story 2 and Ullasa Utsaha are some of his memorable roles on silver screen. He entered film scene in the early 1990s and his first break was given by Nagathihalli Chandrashekar. Belakinedege was his last release.

He was born into a poor family in Mysore in the year 1959. In his younger days he learnt the traditional art forms like Kamsale, Dollu Kunitha and Harikathe, as he was born to Kuruba Gowda community. He worked as a lab assistant before he received his first break to films. Nagathihalli Chandrashekar’s Undu Hoda Kondu Hoda in 1992 marked his film debut. The same director offered him the second role - Kotreshi Kanasu two years later. Known for his natural performance he excelled in his roles and worked in movies, theatre and television. His chemistry with Umashree was very successful for many movies and they were frequently paired for movies.

In 2009 his married daughter committed suicide, which affected Karibasavaiah a lot. He was regularly featured by Nagathihalli Chandrashekar in many of his movies. The director also paid the actor’s medical bills during his last days. Karibasavaiah met with the accident on Kanakapura Road while he was driving back home on his car after a film’s shooting. Though he was admitted to a hospital, he died on 3 February 2012. Sangoli Rayanna and Chitramandira were released posthumously.
