Karaikudi Mani Biography

Karaikudi Mani is an Indian percussionist and mridangam exponent. He is widely regarded among the music exports as one among the all-time great mridangam players. Guru Karaikudi Mani has launched a gurukulam called "Seasun Gurukulam” off East Coast Road in Chennai. He is the founder of magazine called Layamani Layam. His latest venture titled "Amrutham - Fusion for Freedom" is an international collaboration. In 1986, he started an ensemble called Sruthi Laya that combined melody and percussionand he founded the Sruthi Laya Seva School at Chennai, followed by Bangalore, Australia, London, USA, and Canada. For 4 decades he declined all honours given to him and finally accepted Sangeeth Natak Academy award in the year 1999, presented to him by then President of India, K. R. Narayanan.

 

Karaikudi Mani was born on September 11, 1945 at Karaikudi, a place in Tamil Nadu to T. Ramanatha Iyer and Pattammal. Later he added ‘Karaikudi’ tag to his name. He started vocal training in music at the age of 3 and very soon abandoned it to learn Mridangam. He started live concerts at the time when Palghat Mani Iyer was at the top.  Then he took advanced learning under Haihara Sharma at Chennai. He received his first national award at the age of 18 from the then President of India, Radhakrishnan.

 

In 1986, he started Sruthi Laya which later gave birth to Sruthi Laya Seva School at Chennai with branches in several foreign countries including US and UK. In 1990 in collaboration with collaboration with V. S Narasimhan, he presented Melodyssey, a project with 40 artistes which included both Indian and western artists. He has also collaborated with foreign artists for many fusion albums.
