Kamal Kapoor Biography

Kamal Kapoor was a popular character artist associated with Bollywood who has played both positive and negative roles. He lived during the period, Feb 22, 1920 - Aug 2, 2010. He has played numerous police officer roles onscreen and was quite noticed for his trademark - blue eyes. Film fans still remember him for playing the villain role ‘Narang’ of Amitabh Bachchan’s one of the biggest hits – Don (1978). Since then he regularly appeared in many Amitabh movies.

 

In a career spanning to fifty years, he has acted in around 600 films in Hindi, Punjabi and Gujarati languages and lived a long life of 90 years. He was not active in films during his last years. He acted till late 1990s. He had 5 children of whom his elder son Kapil Kapoor is a film director. He was cousin of Prithviraj Kapoor (the 1st member of the illustrious Kapoor Film Family) & maternal grandfather of Goldie Behl.

 

He was born in 1920 in Lahore, Punjab in the month of February. Now this place belongs to Pakistan. He started his film career as a hero in the late 1940s. Though he was not successful as a lead actor, he gained popularity as a character artist later. Door Chalen released in 1946 was his first movie as a lead actor. Later switched on to character roles, one of his early successful roles was Aag, where he played the father of Raj Kapoor.

 

He played the role of Public prosecutor in Shahid, Ranjeet in Ek Musafir Ek Hasin, Commander Vikram in Raja Aur Runk, Rajesh Khanna’s friend in Raaz, Ravi's Father in Seeta Aur Geeta, ACP Sharma in Toofan, Nawab Zafar Ali Khan in Pakeezha, Rai Bahadur Chunnilal Khanna in Jab Jab Phool Khile etc. Gora Aur Kala, Mard, Taqdeer, Sachaa Jhutha, Indrajeet etc are a few more roles.
