Kalasala Babu Biography

Kalasala Babu is a veteran actor of Malayalam cinema known for portraying character and supporting roles. He is a noted stage artist and television actor too. He has also portrayed many negative roles on silver screen. He made his film debut through erotic movie, Inayethedi opposite Silk Smitha in 1977 which was a flop. The movie was the first venture of a group of artists including John Paul, Kaloor Dennis and Antony Eastman. Later till early 2000’s, he has appeared in only less no. of movies and was most active with theater. Now he is busy with Mollywood. The actor has completed 32 years in acting. His distinctive acting style and facial expressions have always been applauded.

 

Babu is the son of Kathakali maestro Kalamandalam Krishnan Nair and Mohiniyattam exponent Kalamandalam Kalyanikutty Amma. Yet he never thought of entering the same field. He didn’t get objection from his family too. He became active in radio plays while at college. He completed graduation in 1973. His acting in the theater play, Paanchajanyam was well noticed. Then he entered to amateur plays. Babu acted at Kalidasa Kala Kendram for two years where he got opportunity to work with doyens of Malayalam theater like O. Madhavan and K. T. Muhammed. His film debut in 1977 was a flop and he returned back to theater. Inayethedi was made in black and white and colour films were popular in those days. That’s one of the reasons why film flopped.

 

Alter he started his drama troupe 'Kalasala' in Thrippunithura. The first play `Thalavattom’ was a huge success. Doyen of Malayalam theater and cinema, Thilakan was an artist oThrippunithuraf his troupe. His troupe staged 9 plays in total which included the works of many experienced artists like P. J. Antony and N. N. Pillai. The theater group pulled down its curtains in 1980 due to lack of good scripts. It was the days of hardships when he tried rubber business and a few more attempts. Then he had a fresh beginning as a television artist through 1999 series, `Kala’ where his role of Rowdy Dasappan was well noticed. He made his comeback to cinema through Kastoorimaan and there is no turning back after that.
