K. Vishwanath Biography

Kasinathuni Viswanath, popularly known as K. Vishwanath is one of the greatest directors of Telugu cinema. He has also directed other regional languages including Hindi and has also appeared as an actor in many movies. He is a sound designer turned Engineer and has won numerous National and Nandi awards. Two of his blockbusters and have achieved cult classic figures and has also listed in 100 best movies - Shankarabharanam (1979) and Sagara Sangamam (1983). His noted Hindi movies are – Sanjog, Eeshwar, Sargam, Sangeet, Jag Utha Insaan, Kaamchor and Dhanwaan and he has introduced many south Indian heroines to Hindi, of whom Jayapradha’s name comes first. In 1986, his directorial venture Swati Mutyam was India's official entry to the Oscars. Many of his films were shown in international film festivals including Asia Pacific Film Festival, Besancon Film Festival and Moscow Film Festival and have won many awards as well.

 

He was awarded with honorary doctorate by Potti Sreeramulu Telugu University and Indian government has honoured him with Padma shree. In 1981, his masterpiece Shankarabharanam received Prize of the Public at the Besancon Film Festival of France. He has received 5 National awards till now. He has won best regional award in Telugu three times, for the movies, Swati Mutyam, Sutradharulu and Swarabhishekam. In 1982, he received Nargis Dutt Award for Best Feature Film on National Integration for the movie, Saptapadi and in 1980 he received National Film Award for Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment for the movie Sankarabharanam. In 1989, he received Filmfare award for best story for the movie, Eashwar. He has received Filmfare awards (south) for best director seven times and Nandi awards 12 times.

 

Viswanath began his career as a technician in a studio at Chennai and later became assistant director of Adurthi Subba Rao. As a debut director, his first movie was Aatma Gowravam which won Nandi awards for best film that year. Powerful woman centric movies like Chelleli Kapuram, Sarada, O Seeta Katha and Jeevana Jyoti just followed these and he became one of the most successful directors of the time.
