K. V. Thomas Biography

K. V. Thomas is a prominent congress leader from Ernakulam, Kerala. He currently serves as Member of Parliament representing Ernakulam Constituency. In 2009 he won his Lok Sabha seat from Ernakulam in a powerful contest against Sindhu Joy in a nail biting finish. A member of All India Congress Committee since 1984 he is a senior leader associated with the party in state politics as well as central politics. He is also an author who published six books till now. "Ente Kumbalangi" (2004) is his first published work. He has served as a cabinet minister in both state assembly as well as Lok Sabha multiple times.

 

He was born in 1946 in Kumbalangi, Kochi. Born to K. D. Varkey and Rose Varkey, he has two elder brothers. He is married to Sherly Thomas and the couple has three children. He took Master’s in Chemistry and served as Professor of Chemistry at Sacred Heart College, Thevara for long 33 years. He retired as HOD in 2001. Got involved with politics in the 1970s he served as the President of 7th Ward Congress Committee (1970–75). Since then he served in many elite positions of district level and state politics. He is a member of General Council of INTUC since 1976.

 

He became a prominent leader in state politics in 1980s and got elected to Lok Sabha for the first time in 1984. He held the position of Member of Parliament till 1996. He later got involved with state politics. He got elected to 12th Kerala Legislative Assembly and served as Minister for Excise and Tourism and Minister for Tourism and Fisheries between 2001 and 2004. Later he got involved with national level politics and was elected to parliament in 2009 and 2014.
