K. V. Mahadevan Biography

K. V. Mahadevan was an Indian music composer who concentrated in Tamil and Telugu films. He was affectionately called as mama. He was born on 6th December 1918 in Krishnankoil in Kanyakumari in Madras Presidency in British India in a Tamil Brahmin family. He has composed music for over 600 films and he was in the industry for about forty years.

 

He started to compose music in 1950s. His debut film was Avan Amaran. When most of the music composers first compose music and then the lyrics are written, he gave importance to lyrics and so he used to compose music that was suited to the lyrics. All his film music had a touch of Carnatic music.

 

In his music composition the signers were at their liberty to sing as they prefer and they are allowed to give suitable ideas if necessary. He had worked with K. Viswanath in many films and has given a number of music hits. Some of the directors that he had worked with include Adurthi Subba Rao, K. Viswanath, V. Madhusoodana Rao, V. B. Rajendra Prasad, K. S. Prakash Rao, Bapu, Balachander, K. Bapaiah.

 

He also had composed music for the TV serial Noopur. He had also worked with the lyricists like Acharya Atreya, Arudra, Veturi, Kosaraju, Srinivasa Rao, and Mysore Vasudevachar and had worked with the famous singers like P. Suseela, Leela and Ghantasala and with S. P. Balasubramanyam, Janaki, Chithra, Yesudas and Vani Jeyaram.

 

 Some of the films for which he had composed music include Saakshi, Undamma Bottu Pedata, Saraswathi Sabatham, Thali Bhagyam, Kandan Karunai, Thiruvilayadal, Sita Swayamvar, Adavi Ramudu, Mana Voori Pandavulu, Seetamalakshmi, Siri Siri Muvva, Gorintaku, Sankarabharanam, Radha Kalyanam, Subhalekha, Swathi Kiranam, etc.

 

He won National Film Award for Best Music Direction for the film Sankarabharanam in 1979 and Kandan Karunai in 1967. He was the first one to receive the award. The last film for which he scored music was Swathi Kiranam in 1992. He died on 21st 2001 in Chennai at his age of 82.
