K. V. Krishna Rao Biography

Kotikalapudi Venkata Krishna Rao, known as K. V. Krishna Rao was a former army chief who played a key role in the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War. He was the 14th Chief of the Army Staff of Indian Army whose career spanned to over 4 decades till his retirement. Rao also served as the Governor of Jammu and Kashmir at a time of militancy. He passed away on Jan 30 2016 following a cardiac arrest aged 92. Rao was commissioned into the Indian Army in 1942.

 

A resident of Andhra Pradesh, he was born on July 16, 1923 in Vijaywada to K. S. Narayan Rao and Mrs. K. Lakshmi Rao. He was married to K. Radha Rao and the couple had two children. He was commissioned into the Indian Army on August 9, 1942 and has served in the countries – Myanmar, North West Frontier and Baluchistan during World War Second. His role as Company Commander of 3 Mahar in Kashmir operations of 1948 and stressful areas of Punjab during Partition are really commendable. After independence he served as an instructor at National Defence Academy for a couple of its formative years. He was one of its founders as well.

 

Later he had commanded a brigade in the forward area of Ladakh during 1965-66, and after a few roles in Jammu, he rose to prominence in the early 1970s. His role as GOC of 8 Mountain Division in Sylhet sector in the 1971 war was his most glorious moment of his professional career. He was captured in the iconic photograph of 1971, when Pakistani Lt General Niazi surrendered to Lt General Js Aurora. He was awarded the Param Vishist Seva Medal for the leadership and determination to command this war. He served as General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of Western Command during 1979-81. Rao served as he Chief of Army Staff during the period 1981-1983.
