K. Subrahmanyam Biography

K. Subrahmanyam was a prominent international strategic affairs analyst, journalist and former Indian civil servant from Tiruchirapalli, Tamil Nadu. Subrahmanyam has long been an influential voice in Indian security affairs and regarded as the doyen of India's strategic affairs community and a proponent of Realpolitik. He was also a key figure in framing and influencing Indian security and nuclear policy. He was the second director of the New Delhi-based Institute for Defence Studies and Analyses and was a major advocate of the 2007 Indo-US civilian nuclear agreement during the government of Manmohan Singh. He has also presided over several Indian government committees and commissions of inquiry, including an India – Pakistan war.

 

He was born 19 January 1929 in Tiruchirapalli, Tamil Nadu. His childhood days were spent at his hometown and Chennai. He completed MSc in Chemistry from the Presidency College, University of Madras in 1950. He was the first rank holder of Indian Civil Services Examination the same year. He was appointed to the Indian Administrative Service in 1951. After a long term service in his state as well as Defense Ministry, he was appointed a Rockefeller Fellow in Strategic Studies at the London School of Economics in 1966. Once returned, he was appointed as the director of Institute for Defence Studies and Analyses.

 

Later he has served many honorable positions all over India. Chairman of India's Joint Intelligence Committee in New Delhi, Fourth Member of Board of Revenue, Government of Tamil Nadu, Home Secretary, Government of Tamil Nadu, Additional Secretary, Cabinet Secretariat, New Delhi and Union Secretary for Defence Production in the Ministry of Defence are among those. He retired as Director of IDSA in 1980. He has published 14 books of which a few are co-authored. He died on 2 February 2011.
