K. S. Ashwath Biography

K. S. Ashwath was a veteran actor of Kannada film industry whose career spanned to more than 50 glorious years and he worked in more than 350 movies. He also participated in Indian freedom struggle movement and has also worked as a stenographer for about 10 years. In 2008, he was conferred an honorary doctorate from the Tumkur University for his outstanding contributions to film industry. He received Rajkumar Award from Karnataka government. His son, Shankar Ashwath is also a cine actor.

 

His full name is Karaganahalli Subbaraya Ashwathanarayana, shortly known as Ashwath. He originally belonged to Holenarsipur district and was born in Mysore in 1925. He studied till intermediate and when he joined freedom struggle movement, his studies was discontinued. He was actively involved in Quit India Movement and later he earned the job of a food inspector. Later he joined government service as a stenographer and worked for 10 years. He entered film industry in the early 1950’s and stayed here for more than 50 years, till his death.

 

He joined Mysore All India Radio where he worked as a voice actor of radio plays. Later he moved to theatre and it paved way to movies as well. He appeared in lead roles in many of stage plays and in one such occasion he was spotted by film director K. Subramanyam who gave him a role in the next movie, Streerathna. The movie was released in 1956 marking his film debut. He is the first Kannada actor to appear in a colour film and his noted roles include Nagarahavu, Nandadeepa, Gejjepuje Sharapanjara Jenugudu, Nyayave Devaru, Belli Moda Kittur, Chennamma and Gange Gauri. Slowly he moved towards character roles and excelled in the role of father in many movies.
