K. R. Meera Biography

K. R. Meera is a prominent young writer of Malayalam at present, best known for her novel Aarachaar (2012), which fetched her numerous accolades including Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award (2013), Odakkuzhal Award (2013), Vayalar Award (2014) and Kendra Sahitya Akademi Award (2015). It was also shortlisted for the 2016 DSC Prize for South Asian Literature. Aarachaar – is widely regarded as one of the best Malayalam novels in the recent times. Serialized in Madhyamam Weekly in continuous 53 volumes, it was published as a novel in 2012. She is also a journalist, columnist and screenwriter. She co-scripted National award winning movie, Ore Kadal apart from four television serials.

 

Meera was born on February 19, 1970 in Sasthamkotta of Kollam district. She is married to a journalist and the couple is currently settled in Kottayam. They have one daughter. Meera started her career as a journalist with Malayalam daily Malayala Manorama in Kottayam in 1993 and reached till the position of Senior Sub Editor of Manorama, when she resigned. During this period she published several short stories which earned her many awards also. She started writing fiction in 2001 and her first short story collection Ormayude Njarambu was published in 2002. The collection won Kerala Sahitya Akademi’s Gita Hiranyan Endowment Award and Ankanam Literary Award.

 

In 2004, she published her second book – Mohamanja. Ave Maria (2008) earned her the first Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award. Till now she has published 26 short story collections including Machakathe Thachan, Ormayude Njarampu, Mohamanja, Ave Maria, Karineela, Malakhayude Marukukal, Karineela, Soorpanakha, Alif Laila and Ottapalam Kadakkuvolam. Apart from Aarachar, Aa Maratheyum Marannu Marannu Njan, Meera Saadhu, Nethronmeelanam and Yudasinte Suvishesham are among her published novels. Meerayude Novellakal (2014) is the compilation of 5 of her short novels. Aarachaar is widely regarded as her master piece.
