K. P. Ummer Biography

K. P. Ummer was a veteran actor of Malayalam cinema during 1960’s, 1970’s and 1980’s known for negative roles. Later he shifted to character roles. He has acted as main villain in numerous blockbuster hits of Prem Nazir. In fact, he was the most frequent villain in the evergreen hero’s movies. Though he was infamous for rape scenes in Malayalam cinema, it can’t be denied the fact that he was one of the greatest Malayalam actors for his powerful screen presence. In real life, he was a noble person. He was a professional stage actor of numerous theatres including KPAC before reaching cinema. His debut movie was Rarichan enna pouran (1956).

Ummer was born in Kozhikode on October 11, 1930. Though he was not born in a family of artists, since early childhood Ummer dreamt to become an actor. It was just co-incidental that he entered theatre. Once he was invited by former minister P. P. Ummer Koya to do the heroine’s role in the drama, Apradhi. In those days, males played female character too and he played the lead heroine – Jameela. It was followed by the role of Haji in a famous play, Ithu bhoomiyanu. This character was in the top news for a long time and thus Ummer became a popular stage actor through this role. Ummer was only 17 years old when he played the role of old Haji in this play.

Alter through a series of plays like Puthiya aakasham puthiya bhoomi, Karavayatta pasu, Manushyan kaaragrahathilanu, Aswametham and Sarasayya he cemented his position in Kerala theatre. He entered big screen through Rarichan enna pouran in 1956 and was active in the industry for more than 4 decades. Mannar Mathai speaking (1995), The car (1996) and Harikrishnans (1998) were his last screen appearances.
