K. P. A. C. Azeez Biography

Azeez was a noted character artist associated with Malayalam cinema. Known for portraying villain and police roles onscreen he was a great theater artist too, associated with K. P. A. C, the leading theatre troupe of Malayalam all time. He also excelled as a character artist through the roles he played during his last years. Azeez was a Deputy Superintendent (D.Y.S.P) in Indian Police. Azeez got associated with malayaalm cinema in 1970 and was last seen in 2000 horror movie – Indriyam. He passed away on 16 July 2003 aged 68. He stayed at his career peak in the 1980s and 1990s. He regularly played policeman role in Joshy and Shaji Kailas’ movies such as Kauravar, Lelam, Dhruvam, Yatra, The King etc.

 

He was born on 27 November 1934 in Vembayam, Thiruvananthapuram district, then belonging to Travancore kingdom. Thekkadda near Vembayam was his native village. He completed graduation from University College, Thiruvananthapuram and worked as a police officer for many years. He rose to the rank till Deputy Superintendent (D.Y.S.P) in Kerala Police. He got married to Sainam beevi, a teacher and the couple had three children – two daughters and one son. His son Raja is a television artist, also associated with theater. He retired from Kerala Police from Vigilance department in the year 1989.

 

Azeez reached cinema through professional drama. He was a glowing star of KPAC theater troupe. Nishaagandhi in 1970 was his first credited role. Neelakannukal, Vanadevatha, Swapnadanam, Kodiyettam etc are some of his early roles. Peruvazhiyambalam in 1979 directed by Padmarajan made Azeez a popular actor. Prior to this movie, Adoor Gopalakrishnan gave him a noted role in National award winning film – Kodiyettam. Later too the legendary director gave him some excellent roles in his movies – Vidheyan and Mathilukal.

 

He portrayed cruel and crooked police officer roles too. Jail Superintendent in 'Bhoopathi’, Police Commissioner in 'Indraprastham', Jailer  in 'Season' , Police Officer of 'Pattana Pravesam' , Jailer in 'Nirakoottu',  Police Officer in 'Raktham' and F.I.R. earned hatred from viewers as these roles looked real. His role as minister in 'Dina Rathrangal' was well noted.
