K. Muraleedharan Biography

K. Muraleedharan is the son of famous congress leader and former chief minister of Kerala, late. K. Karunakaran. He is also a member of Indian National Congress. He was elected as member of the Lok Sabha thrice (in 1989, 1991, and 1999) from the Kozhikode constituency, representing the Indian National Congress. He left the party in 2005, though joined again later. His political activities have always gained attention from media as well as public.

 

K. Muraleedharan was born to K. Karunakaran and Kalyani Kutty Amma in Thrissur on the 14 May 1957. His sister Padmaja Venugopal is also active in politics. He completed Bachelor of Arts degree from Mar Ivanios College, Thiruvananthapuram and was qualified in law from Kerala Law Academy Law College. He is interested in films and sports as well. The house 'Murali Mandiram' at Thrissur is named after him.

 

He started his political career working as Seva Dal worker for congress party. Later he held the posts of District Chairman and State Chief of Kerala Seva Dal. He participated in Parliament elections for the first time in 1989. He defeated CPI (M) leader Embichibava straight in the elections and became Member of Parliament for the first time. He was the winning candidate from Kozhikode. Subsequently he became Congress Candidate from Kozhikode in 1991 and 1999 to participate in Parliament elections and both time he defeated Janata dal candidates. He won his first assembly elections in 2011 defeating ruling Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M). It was soon after his re-entry to Congress and he participated in Congress ticket from Vattiyurkavu Assembly constituency.  

 

In February 2004, Muraleedharan was appointed Minister of Power in the A. K. Antony Ministry, though he was not a member of the Kerala Legislative Assembly. He was to win a seat within 6 months to continue as minister, but he lost it.
