K. Jayakumar Biography

K. Jayakumar is a popular poet, writer, lyricist and screenwriter of Malayalam. A notable a bureaucrat he is also a civil servant of the Indian Administrative Service cadre, who retired as the Chief Secretary of Kerala in the year 2012. He currently serves as the first Vice-Chancellor of Thunchath Ezhuthachan Malayalam University in Malappuram, inaugurated on 1 November 2012 (Kerala Piravi Day). It was Jayakumar who prepared the Project Report of the University. The university is named after Thunchath Ramanujan Ezhuthachan – hailed as "The Father of Malayalam language". K. Jayakumar is the son of popular Malayalam film director, M. Krishnan Nair of “CID” series (starring Prem Nazir) fame.

 

He was born to M. Krishnan Nair and Sulochana Devi in Thiruvananthapuram. He belongs to 1978 Kerala cadre batch of IAS, who began his civil service as an assistant collector in 1980. Since then he has hold several administrative positions of Kerala including District Collector of Kozhikode, Director of Tourism Department, Government of Kerala, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Tourism & Culture, Government of India, Chief Secretary, Government of Kerala and many more. After his retirement from civil service as Chief Secretary in the year 2012, he was appointed as VC of Malayalam University in 2012.

 

As a writer, he has published many poetry collections, translations and other publications. His anthology of poems includes - Aathriyude Sadhyathakal, Geetanjali (Translation of Tagore’s Original work), Ardhavrithangal, Solamante Pranayageethangal and Rumiyude Pranayakavithakal. Kerala – a poem in green and gold and Seduction of the Soul are his famous poems. Following his father’s steps, Jayakumar has also given some contributions to Malayalam cinema too. He has penned a few film scripts apart from lyrics. The devotional song - Kudajaadriyil Kudikollum Maheswari of unreleased film - Neela Kadamb (1985) was penned by none other than Jayakumar. He has also penned lyrics for Kunjaattakkilikal, Ee kaikalil, Malarum Kiliyum, Akalangalil etc, belonging to the sweet melodious era of 1980s.
