K. G. George Biography

K.G. George is one of the most celebrated film directors of Malayalam. It’s widely remarked that he modernized Malayalam cinema during 70’s. He is the founder-chairman of MACTA, and continues to be an executive member. He was the chairman of the Kerala State Film Development Corporation. Swapnadanam – a black and white movie of 1976 marked the directorial debut of K. G. George. It won the Kerala State Film Award for Best Film and National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Malayalam.  The movie starring Rani Chandra and Soman was a commercial hit also. After that he delivered numerous hit movies one after the other and he left film field in the year 1999, his last film being Ilavangodu Desam with Mammootty in lead. He has later revealed that he had some issues with Mammootty during the shooting of the movie and that he was shocked by the change in attitude by the film star with whom he has done many movies during 80’s.

 

George took a diploma from FTII, Pune and joined as the assistant to director Ramu Kariat, the legend of Malayalam cinema. Swapnadanam was his debut movie as a director which was a real breakthrough of his career too. Later he went on delivering hits one after the other with all leading stars of Malayalam. A few of his memorable films are Mela, Adaminte Variyellu, Panchavadi Palam, Mattoraal, Irakal, Kolangal, Lekhayude Maranam Oru Flashback, Yavanika and Ulkakal. Before the release of the movie - Lekhayude Maranam Oru Flashback, rumours were already spread that it was based on the real life story of south Indian actress Shobha, though George denied it.  

 

After his debut movie, his most memorable movie was Yavanika for which he won State awards for best cinema. This movie was an off-beat suspense thriller and the whole story revolves around a drama troupe. The story was unfolding the truth behind the murder of Gopi. Panchavadi paalam was a Political comedy though its climax is a bit heart touching. As a story writer, he has won state awards for Yavanika, Irakal and Aadaminte vaariyellu.
