K. Chakravarthy Biography

K. Chakravarthy was a highly acclaimed music director of Telugu film industry. His contribution to Tollywood music is immensely huge. He has composed music for over 960 movies belonging to different languages. In the late 1980s he was at the peak of his career. Of 95 Telugu movies released in 1989, he scored music for 66 ones, which indeed is a great record! In fact, almost every popular Telugu music director of today was his disciple. He ruled the music world for almost 2 decades from 1971 to 1989. A multi-faceted personality, Chakravarthy was also a lyricist, writer, actor and a dubbing artiste. As a dubbing artist, he has rendered his voice for more than 600 movies belonging to Telugu and other languages. His son Sri Kommineni is a music director and a playback singer.

 

His real name is Kommineni Apparao, born in Poonnekallu of Andhra Pradesh in the year 1936. Chakravarthy had learnt classical vocal from Mahavadi Venkatappaih. During his graduation, he started a troupe which performed light music for stage shows. During one such show he was spotted by Mangapati of HMV who asked him to come to Chennai. Two private records were given which include the track, "Kanna Nenoka Kala". When Tamil film 'Thamarai Nenjam' was remade to Telugu, he was given the music director’s cap by directors Rajen-Nagendra. The movie titled "Mangala Yoga” went unnoticed. Later he took up the career of a dubbing artist to earn a living. He also worked as an assistant director to C.S. Rao during his struggling period.

 

He was also associated with K.V. Mahadevan as a lyricist. Later Chakravarthy got opportunity to learn classical music from Mahavadi Venkatappayya. This proved to be the real breakthrough of his career. "Mooga Prema” (1969) started his new beginning as a music director and he ruled the music industry for 2 decades. Trisulam, Khaidi, Vijetha, Chantabbayi, Mooga Prema, Sarada, Balipeetam, Vetagadu, Yamagola, Premabhishekam, Driver Ramudu, Kondaveeti Simham, Viswaroopam, Bobbili Brahmanna, Kondaveeti Raja, Idaa Lokam, Mallepoovu, Adavi Donga, Swathi and Pratighatana are among his memorable music scores.
