Jyotirindranath Tagore Biography

Jyotirindranath Tagore was a writer, musician, painter and editor; a talented person who had the rare capability of spotting talent in others. He is the elder brother of one of the greatest Indian personality, Rabindranath Tagore. He played a significant role in nourishing the talents of his younger brother. It can be said that though he was an extra talented person, his younger brother outshined him. He was 12 years elder to Rabindranath. He was born in one of the prominent families of Bengal – Tagore family as the grandson of Dwarkanath Tagore and the fifth son of Debendranath Tagore. His siblings too were talented and had played a significant role in the renaissance of Bengal.

Jyotirindranath Tagore was born in the Tagore family of Jorasanko, in Kolkata on May 4, 1849. Among his siblings, Dwijendranath Tagore was a poet and philosopher, Satyendranath Tagore, a musician and younger sister, Swarnakumari Devi, a well-known writer and musician. He was taught at home by his elder brother Hemendranath. Later he studied at St. Paul’s and Montague’s school, and passed Entrance Examination from Hindu School in 1864. While studying for the First Arts examination in Presidency College, he lost interest in studies and moved towards theatre. Thus he left his studies in the middle.

He formed a home theatre group and staged dramas. His cousin Ganendranath established the Jorasanko Natyasala in 1865 and when the first play, Krishnakumari was staged, Tagore played the role of Ahalyadevi. Later he became one of the most versatile playwrights from Bengal. Purubikram (1874), Sarojini (1875), Ashrumati (1879) and Swapnamayi (1882) were his noted historic plays. Kinchit Jalajog, Eman Karma Ar Korbo Na, Hathath Nabab and Alik Babu were his satire plays. Apart from writing, he was interested in music and drawing. He has also served as the secretary of the Adi Brahmo Samaj from 1869 to 1888 and founded the Adi Brahmo Samaj Sangitvidyalay. He was married to Kadambari Devi and later she committed suicide. The couple had no children.
