Jayanta Hazarika Biography

Jayanta Hazarika was a prominent music composer and singer belonging to Assamese language. He also wrote lyrics for a few songs and composed songs for movies as well. Jayanta Hazarika was the youngest brother of Bhupen Hazarika, a doyen in the field of Indian music. A trendsetter in Assamese music scene in the 1970s, Jayanta is credited to introducing rock and roll, jazz and Western Classical forms of music to Assamese music scene and he became immensely successful with such fusion experiments. He regularly performed with his wife, Manisha Hazarika. Their only son Mayukh Hazarika is also a successful performer who performs aside his mother and wife, Laili Dutta Hazarika. Jayanta Hazarika met with a premature death when he was only 34.

 

Jayanta was born into a family with strong music background. His elder brother Bhupen Hazarika is a legendary figure of Indian music scene who has been awarded Dada Saheb Phalke Award in 1992 and Padma Vibhushan posthumously. Nilakanta Hazarika and Shantipriya Hazarika were his parents. He was born as the youngest of 10 children to his parents. Brought up in a music atmosphere, all the siblings were deeply attached to music. Jayanta composed his first song at the age of 9, on a song written by his elder brother, Bhupen. He studied till matriculation and after he failed in the exam, he concentrated on to his music career.

 

He started off accompanying his elder brother Bhupen for live shows and concerts. Later he recorded two songs with HMV - Aagoli botahe kopale kolore paat and Krishnachura Krishnachura which became major success. Very soon he established as a phenomenon in Assamese music scene. A duet with Shyamal Mitra - Sonar baran pakhire tor for the movie, Maniram Dewan marked his singing debut in 1963. The music score was done by Bhupen. Apart from singing he has also composed songs for movies, stage plays and documentary films. In 1977 he went for a song recording in Kolkata. He suddenly fell ill and passed away on 15 October 1977. This unexpected death of a singing star shocked the music world.
