Jayan. K. Cherian Biography 
Jayan K. Cherian is a promising director of Malayalam, who directed the highly acclaimed but controversial movie - Papilio Buddha in 2013. Papilio Buddha is his debut full length movie. He is also the director of highly acclaimed documentary film - Shape of the Shapeless, which bagged many awards at many film festivals. He is also known as a poet and documentary film maker. Love in the Time of Foreclosure, Hidden Things, Soul of Solomon, Capturingthe Signs of God, Holy Mass, Tree of Life, Simulacra the Reality of the Unreal, The Inner Silence of the Tumult, Hid-entity and Tandava the Dance of Dissolution are his exceptional short films and narrative films.
Papilio Buddha released in 2013 is a socially relevant movie handled the subject of Dalit discrimination in Indian society and also portrayed gender issues. The movie included 150 tribal people and famous Environmentalist Kallen Pokkudan. The film was initially banned in India and denied censor certification by CFBC for the language used and visuals and dialogues denigrating iconic leaders including Mahatma Gandhi. The movie was later released in January 2013 after a controversial speech by Ambedkar was muted. The movie was later shown at many international film festivals and had received the privilege of being the only Indian movie shown at Panorama Section at the 64th Berlin International Film Festival and 27th London Lesbian & Gay Film Festival organised by the British Film Institute.
He was born in Muvattupuzha, Kerala and he currently lives in New York, US. He graduated with honors from Hunter College, BA in Film and Creative Writing and MFA from The City College of New York in Writing Directing Film, and Cinematography. As a writer, he won Kerala Sahitya Akademi award for Ayodhanathinte Achuthandu in 1996. Ayanam vachana rekhayil and Pachakku are his noted Malayalam works, apart from a few English works.
