Jayachitra Biography

Jayachitra has been a successful actress of South Indian cinema during 1970’s and 1980’s and has worked with leading actors of the time like Sivaji Ganesan, Gemini Ganesan, Vishnuvardhan, Rajkumar, Ravichandran, Kamal Haasan, Siva Kumar, Sobhan Babu, Muralimohan, Rajinikanth and Jaishankar. She has acted in one Malayalam movie, Nee Enta Lahari where she was paired opposite Kamal Haasan. Towards the end of 1980’s, she became a character artist for numerous south Indian movies. As a film director she debut with Tamil film "Puthiya Ragam" (1991) where she played the lead role. In 2010 she launched her son Amresh through Tamil film "Naane Ennul Illai" and both these movies were produced by herself. She has done more than 200 movies and has also appeared in several television serials. She married an industrialist named Ganesh in 1983.

 

Jayachitra was born as Lakshmi in 1957 in Chennai. Her family was originally from Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh. Her father Mahendra was a veterinary doctor who has practised as a lawyer earlier. Her mother Ammaji was an actress. She debut big screen as a child artist through the Telugu movie, "Bhakta Potana" at the age of 10. Tamil film "Korathi Magan," (1973) was her debut movie as an adult actress. K.S. Gopalakrishnan was its director. He signed three more films and gave her the screen name, Jayachitra. Ponnukku Thanga Manasu, Ponnukku Thanga Manasu, Sollathaan Ninaikiren and Navaratnam are her earliest Tamil movies. She has worked in numerous movies opposite Kamal Haasan in different languages. Nee Enta Lahari (Malayalam), Vayasu Pilichindi (1978 ) (Telugu) and Ilamai Oonjal Aadukirathu (1978) (Tamil) are its instances.

 

She played the lead role in the Telugu film "Kalpana" (1977), remake of the Hindi hit Anamika and Cinema Paithiyam (remake of the Hindi hit Guddi). As an actress, she was known for her courage and spontaneity. She has acted in movies related to wild life like "Vellikizhamai Viratham" (1974) and "Cheppindi Chesta" (1978). Most memorable roles of her career are included in the movies, "Ponnukku Thanga Manasu", "Sathyam", "Kalyanamam Kalyanam" and "Vandikaran Magan".
