Jay Sean Biography

Jay Sean is a British singer-songwriter, rapper, beatboxer and record producer of Indian origin. His real name is Kamaljit Singh Jhooti, born to Sharan and Bindi Jhooti, Punjabi Sikh immigrants of London. He debut in the year 2003 in the UK's Asian Underground scene as a member of the Rishi Rich Project with "Dance with You" which was a chartbuster. His studio albums till now are Me Against Myself (2004), My Own Way (2008), All or Nothing (2009) and Neon (2013). His compilation albums are Hit the Lights (India Tour Edition) (2011) and Hit the Lights, So High and The Best of Jay Sean (Japan Editions) all released in the year 2012. He has made a cameo appearance in Bollywood movie - Kyaa Kool Hai Hum (2005).

 

He was born on 26 March 1981 at Harlesden, Brent of London. He was brought up in Southall, west London. At age 11, he and his cousin Pritpal Rupra formed a hip hop duo named "Compulsive Disorder". In those days, he was known by the names, MC "Nicky J". Later he came to be known by the name Jay among his friends. He completed schooling from Latymer Upper School in the year 1997. Then he finished his GCSEs and A Levels and enrolled in Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry at Queen Mary, University of London. But he dropped medicine in the year 2003 to pursue a career in music. He chose the stage name Jay Sean.

 

In association with producer Rishi Rich, he tasted his first success in the year 2003. Asian underground song, "Dance with You (Nachna Tere Naal)", which became a Top 20 hit where it appeared as 12th song. Very soon Sean signed a big deal with Virgin Records, under their label Relentless Records marking his successful debut. His second single, "Eyes on You," was his first solo effort and got position in top 10, where it was charted at position 6. His third single, "Stolen," featuring Bipasha Basu peaked at #4. His debut album, Me Against Myself, was released in 2004 and came to be known by the name, Asian sensation.
