Jay Panda Biography

Baijayant "Jay" Panda, popularly known as Jay Panda is an Indian politician belonging to Biju Janata Dal party. He is a former parliamentarian who has served Rajya Sabha from 2000 to 2009. He was elected twice to the Upper House of Parliament (Rajya Sabha) in 2000 and 2006 from Odisha. He was a Member of Parliament in the 15th Lok Sabha. He was also the Leader of the Parliamentary Party in Rajya Sabha for the Biju Janata Dal (BJD). During his nine year tenure in Rajya Sabha, he has been a member of several Parliamentary Committees such as Finance, Energy, Information Technology, Ethics and Government Assurances.

He belongs to Cuttack, born in the year 1964. He studied Engineering and Management from the Michigan Technological University. He is married to industrialist cum M.D. of Ortel Communications Ltd, Jagi Mangat Panda. He has also worked as a professional for a short period before joining active politics. He worked under both Biju Patnaik and his son Naveen Patnaik, who later found Biju Janata Dal party, which emerged as the powerful party of the state. He currently resides in Bhubaneswar. He belongs to the list of fewer Indian politicians who have been educated abroad and has strong education background.

Jay Panda is a member of the Citizens’ Alliance against Malnutrition whose main objective is to raise its voice against malnutrition and create awareness among people. He was also included in the campaign to reduce the consumption of tobacco products in India. In January 2013 he requested NHRC and Andhra Pradesh state ministry to investigate about exploitation of migrant Oriya labourers in brick kilns of Andhra Pradesh.
