Javed Akhtar Biography

Javed Akhtar is a noted poet, lyrist and script writer. His family is filled with a dozen of talent people who have given considerable contributions to film world. Shabama Azmi, his wife is the only actress to win National award successively for three years. His first wife Honey Irani is a successful screen writer. His son Farhan Akhtar is a noted director, singer and actor. His daughter Zoya Akhtar is a famous director too, who has directed hit movies like Luck by chance and Zindagi milega na dubara. Javed Akthar belongs to the family of great freedom fighter of India, Allama Fazl-e-Haq Khairabadi and his father is famous Urdu poet Jan Nisar Akhtar.

 

Javed Akhtar lost his mother very young and he completed his graduation in Safiya College Bhopal, where he took an arts degree. He started as script writer. But his first movie Yakeen flopped at the box office. But his pen has created history in Bollywood through the script of Sholay. He has also written screenplays for Sita aur Gita, Deewar, Don and Andaz, Chacha Bhathija, Haathi mere Saathi and many more hit movies of 70’s and 80’s.

 

He married twice. First he married Honey Irani and Farhan and Zoya, two successful people of present Bollywood were born in their relationship. Later he divorced Honey and married Shabana Azmi, the daughter of another famous Urdu poet and Bollywood lyricist, Kaifi Azmi. He has worked with his children in all their projects.

 

It’s not at all easy to list his contributions and achievements. As lyricist, he won Film fare 14 times and as script writer 7 times. He has won best lyricist award in National awards for Kal ho na ho title song, panchi of Refugee, Saaz, Border and God mother thus getting a hat trick, similar to his wife in actress category. He has been awarded Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan by Indian government.

 

His memorable songs include films – 1942 A love story, Refugee, kal ho na ho, Zindagi na milega dobara,  Silsila, Border, Virasat, Sapne, Yes Boss, Om Shanthi Om, What’s your Rashee, Jodha Akbar, Mere Yaar ki shaadi hai, Hamara dil aap ke paas hai, Diljale, Papa kehte hain, Chalte Chalte, 1947 Earth, Namasthey London, Kabhi alvida na kahna, Veer zara, Swadesh, lakshya and many more. It’s not at all easy to list his best from uncountable collection of Javed Akhtar songs. No doubt, present Bollywood music can’t sustain with Javed’s lyrics.

 

Akhtar was a Muslim but later became an atheist. He has brought up his children Farhan and Zoya Akhtar also as atheists.
