Janaki Ramachandran Biography

Janaki Ramachandran was a noted Tamil actress and politician. She is better known as the wife of great actor and politician of yesterdays, M. G. Ramachandran (MGR). After his death in 1987, she succeeded him as the first woman Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu and the Leader of the AIADMK party. She sworn in as the Chief minister of Tamil Nadu in January 1988; but was short lived. The government lasted only 24 days, the shortest in the history of Tamil Nadu. She has given almost all her property for charity organizations. She was the founder chairman of The Satya Educational & Charitable Society.

 

Janaki was born in Vaikom, Kerala in on 30th November, 1923. Her parents are Rajagopal Iyer and Narayani Amma. She was the niece of prominent composer of Carnatic music and singer, Papanasam Sivan (her father's younger brother). Her brother P. Narayanan was an educationalist. She was first married to Ganapati Bhat. J Surendran was born of this wedlock. She later married M. G. Ramachandran, the shining star of Tamil film industry with whom she worked in several movies. It was his third marriage and remained till his death in 1987. MGR and Janaki did not have any child.  

 

As an actress, she owns several hit films - Mohini, Raja Mukthi, Velaikaari, Aiyiram Thalaivangiya Aboorva Chintamani, Devaki and Marudhanaattu Ilavarasi. She has worked in more than 25 films. When M. G. Ramachandran died in 1987, she succeeded him as the first woman Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. She became the leader of AIADMK party as well. She was sworn in as Chief Minsiter in January 1988 and her ministry won the vote of confidence of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly. But the Central Government under the late Rajiv Gandhi used Article 356 of the Constitution of India to dismiss her government. Her party was defeated in 1989 Assembly elections and she retired from active politics. She gave her property in Avvai Shanmugham Salai to house the headquarters of their party in 1986 and gave most of her property for charity purposes. She died of a cardiac arrest on 19 May 1996.
