Jaishankar Biography

Jaishankar was a Tamil film actor of yesterdays known for action roles. He is credited to the titles, Makkal Kalingnar Jaishankar and Thennagathu James Bond. He worked in the era fully dominated by the heroes, Sivaji Ganesan, M. G. Ramachandran and Gemini Ganesan. Yet he was able to create his own niche with portrayals of interesting characters. He has done a lot for charity purposes, yet without any publicity. In the film circle, he is still known for his generosity and friendly behavior. He played the role of lead hero in more than 100 movies and later moved towards character roles. He passed away in the year 2000 following a heart attack. He was survived with his wife and 2 children. Vallavan Oruvan and CID Shankar are his most popular action films.



Born as the son of a magistrate on 12 July 1938 in Chennai, his education was completed at Chennai itself. His birth name is Subramaniam Shankar. After graduation, he pursued law. But he discontinued his studies and got active in theatre. He joined Cho's Viveka Fine Arts, but quit this troupe as he was not satisfied with the roles he got. Later he joined Koothabiran's Kalki Fine Arts through which he earned appreciation in many leading roles. He started approaching film producers. But it was not at all easy to get roles in the fully dominated era of MGR and Sivaji Ganesan. He was employed in Delhi then. Kalki's 'Amara Thaara' was his real breakthrough which gave him film oppurtunities.



Iravum Pagalum was his debut movie. Surprisingly his last movie too was also titled, Iravum Pagalum. Though he got fame as an action hero, his real talent was identified by none other than K. Balachander who honed him as a performer par excellence in Nootrukku Nooru. He also gave Shankar, Poovaa Thalaiyaa, second noted role. He was also called ‘Friday star’, as his movies were frequently released every week. He has also done comic roles and with the emergence of Kamal Hassan and Rajinikanth, he moved to character roles and has also played villain roles aside these stars.
