Jagdish Raj Biography

Jagdish Raj was a Bollywood character artist who was regularly seen in police inspector’s role during Bollywood 1970’s. He holds the Guinness records of being the most type-cast actor as he has appeared onscreen in the role of a Police inspector in 144 Bollywood movies. He created the new record when he completed 21 years in Bollywood. He died on 28 July 2013 in Mumbai aged 85, leaving behind the legend of being one of the most popular character artist during 1970’s. He has appeared in 260 films in his long career of about 40 years of which he played the role of a police officer in 144 movies; ‘Meri Biwi Ka Jawab Nahin’ being the last police man role.

 

Film actress Anita raj is his daughter and film maker Sunil Hingorani is his son-in-law. His last appearance onscreen was for 1992 movie, Khule-Aam. He has been associated with numerous action thrillers of Amitabh Bachchan, with notable roles including - ‘Deewar’, ‘Don’, ‘Shakti’, ‘Mazdoor’, ‘Besharam’, Imaan Dharam’ and ‘Silsilay’. ‘Aaina’ ‘and ‘Gopichand Jasoos’ are other noted works. Jagdish gave new dimensions to the portrayal of copes in Indian cinema.

 

He was born in 1928 in Sargodha, of Present-day Pakistan. Raj debut silver screen with 1955 movie Seema in which, he portrayed the role of a doctor. He was first cast as a police officer in Dev Anand’s 1956 classic hit C.I.D.  After this super successful movie, he began to get similar roles which he gladly accepted. But later he got type casted to similar roles only, creating a new world record! He also holds the Limca Book of Records record for ‘Most memorable policeman ever’.
