Jadugopal Mukherjee Biography

Jadugopal Mukherjee was an eminent Bengali revolutionary who participated in Indian freedom struggle movement. He was the successor of great revolutionary young leader, Jatindranath Mukherjee, who was one among the representatives of those young revolutionaries who were against the slow paced non-violence movement of Mahatma Gandhi. He was associated with Hindustan Republican Association and led a life away from politics after Indian independence. He passed away on 30 August 1976 aged 89. He is popularly called Jadu.

Jadu was born at Tamluk of Medinipur in West Bengal. His father was a lawyer and a distinguished Kheyal singer. Noted writer and cultural scholar Dhan Gopal Mukerji was his younger brother. While schooling at Duff School in Kolkata, he got attracted towards patriotism and became a member of the Kolkata Anushilan Party in 1905. He was inspired a lot by the fights of Bagha Jatin for Indian freedom. In 1908, Jadu entered the Calcutta Medical College. During the 1913 Damodar floods relief works, he came close to Bagha Jain. As a revolutionary, Jadu received the charge of developing the external links from the leader Bagha jain. Following Bagha Jatin’s sudden death in 1915, Jadu replaced him and asked the revolutionaries to disperse.

He returned home in 1921 and completed his medical exams. Later he worked under Jugantar and Chittaranjan Das to form the alternative Swaraj movement to celebrate the 8th anniversary of Bagha Jatin. He got associated with Pandit Ram Prasad Bismil to draft the constitution of Hindustan Republican Association, for which he got arrested and detained for four years. He was exiled from Bengal and he got settled in Ranchi with marriage. He worked with Jugantar till its merge with Indian National Congress but quit active politics following Indian partition.
