Jacqueline Bhabha Biography

Jacqueline Bhabha is a British academic, and an attorney born in Mumbai, India. She is married to famous professor and Director of the Humanities Center at Harvard University, Homi K. Bhabha (a recipient of Padma Bhushan). Currently Jacqueline serves as the FXB Director of Research, Professor of the Practice of Health and Human Rights at the Harvard School of Public Health. She also serves as the Jeremiah Smith Jr. Lecturer in Law at Harvard Law School, and an Adjunct Lecturer in Public Policy at the Harvard Kennedy School. 

 

Her maiden name is Jacqueline Strimpel, born in Mumbai in 1951. She was born to a Jewish couple who moved to India to flee Nazi Germany. At the age of 10, Jacqueline moved with her family to Milan, Italy where they got settled. She completed her matriculation from Bedales, a British boarding school. Later she joined the prestigious Oxford University, where she graduated both in philosophy and psychology with honours degree. In 1975, she completed PG in Department of Social Policy and Intervention from the same university followed by JD from the University of Law in London.

 

After completing her law studies, she started off as a human rights lawyer in London and European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg. In 1997, she took academics as her new profession. She served as the Director of the Human Rights Program in the University of Chicago during the period 1997-2001 and later joined Harvard Law School. Since then she served as a lecturer in many educational institutions including Harvard Kennedy School. She is married to Homi K. Bhabha and the couple has three children - Satya Bhabha, Ishan Bhabha and Leah Bhabha.
