J. D. Chakravarthy Biography

J. D. Chakravarthy is a popular actor and director of Telugu cinema. He has also appeared in a few Tamil, Hindi and Malayalam movies. Chakravarthy is best known for Ram Gopal Varma’s path breaking bilingual movies – Shiva (1989) and Satya (1998). Shiva happened to be his debut movie also. Apart from Shiva and Satya, Chakravarthy has given several blockbusters and super hits to Telugu cinema and has completed 25 years in the film industry. He has done over 50 movies till now.

 

Predominantly worked in Telugu cinema, his name is associated with several big hits like  Neti Siddhartha, Money, Gulabi, Mrugam, Bombay Priyudu, Anaganaga, Satya, Oka Roju, Egire Paavurama, Wife of V. Varaprasad, Premaku Velayara, Pape Naa Pranam, Kannathil Muthamittal, Premaku Swagatam, Madhyanam Hathya, Dubai Seenu, Homam, Josh, Sarvam, Samar, Arima Nambi and Ice Cream 2. Apart from playing lead roles, he has also done numerous character and negative shaded roles. Bhaskar The Rascal – is his latest Malayalam release, where he played a negative role of Nayanthara’s life partner.

 

He was born in Hyderabad in the year 1970. His mother Dr. Santha was a Carnatic singer. He holds an engineering degree from Chaitanya Bharathi Institute of Technology. Ram Gopal Verma's debut Telugu film, Siva marked Chakravarthy’s debut too. He played the negative role of J. Durga Rao in the movie. This cult classic is listed among CNN-IBN's 100 greatest Indian films of all time. He also appeared in a Malayalam movie, Ennodishtam Koodamo before completing switching over to Ram Gopal Varma’s productions. Satya was his first Bollywood movie as a hero; one of the milestones of his acting career. He received Screen Award Special Jury Award for his excellence portrayal of Satya. This movie was also listed among CNN-IBN's 100 greatest Indian films of all time. Mani Ratnam's Tamil film, Kannathil Muthamittal also needs special mention.

 

He has worked with all ace directors of Tollywood since early 1990s. Apart from acting he has also directed a few movies like Darwaza Bandh Rakho, Darna Zaroori Hai, Homam and Sidham. He played female lead opposite Urmila in the movie Satya in the 1990s when Urmila was known only for glamorous roles. Urmila appeared as a simple woman in this movie. He was paired with Manisha Koirala for Aag and Bhoot Returns and Sushmita Sen for Vaastu Shastra.
