Indrans Biography

Indrans is a noted comedian and character artist of Malayalam cinema since 1990s. He is also one of the most established costume designers of Malayalam film industry since late 1980s. Though he was mostly seen in comedy roles in the 1990s, he mostly plays serious character roles in movies right now. His slim figure and body language entertained crowd a lot in the 1990s. He has presented hundreds of memorable roles onscreen through his wonderful screen presence. Namukku Parkkan Munthiri Thoppukal, Kutty shrank, Spadikam, Njan Gandharvan and Ayalathe Adheham are some of his noted works as a costume designer. As a costume designer he has earned many awards and distinctions. His cousin Indrans Jayan is also a costume designer who won National award for best costume design twice – in 2009 and 2010.

He was born in a poor family in Kumarapuram, Thiruvananthapuram. His real name is K. Surendran. He has 6 siblings and due to poor financial conditions of his family, he discontinued his studies after standard six. He was attracted to arts and stitching in those days. He assisted his uncle in his tailoring shop and that’s how he got into the field. He was active in amateur plays doing bit roles during leisure time. He reached film industry as an assistant to costume design in the 1980s. He also got offers to appear in bit roles in movies. He got married to a weaver, Shantakumari in 1985.

He lived on tailoring and ‘Indrans’ was the name of his tailoring shop. Since he did costume designs for the movies in the name of tailoring shop Indrans, later he came to be known by this name. He learnt the real essence of costume design, while working for Padmarajan. Later he received offers from Venu Nagavally, K. Madhu etc. He has acted in more than 200 movies. He appeared in television serials as well. My Dear Kuttichaatham (1997), Aadyathe Kanmani, CID Unnikrishnan B.A., B.Ed, Swapna Lokathe Balabhaskaran, Kokkarakko, Mazhavilkoodaram, Dilliwala Rajakumaran, Spadikam, Vellinakshatram, Mannar Mathai speaking, Kavadiyattam, Chandranudikkuna dikkil, Kilukil Pambaram, Malappuram Haji Mahanaya Joji, Manathe kottaram and Kalyana Uniikal are some of his memorable roles.
