Indira Varma Biography

Indira Varma is a film actress, best known for playing the female protagonist of 1996 controversial movie, Kama Sutra: A Tale of Love directed by Mira Nair. She has also played noted roles in television series - The Canterbury Tales, Rome, Luther, Human Target and Game of Thrones. She is a graduate from prestigious Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, London and was a member of Musical Youth Theatre Company.  

 

Indira was born to Indian father and Swiss mother in Bath, Somerset, England in 1973. She is a single girl child for her parents. After graduation from Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) in London in 1995, she became active in entertainment industry and gave equal preference to movies and television works. She made her film debut with Indian film, Kama Sutra: A Tale of Love, known for its bold theme. She played the female protagonist Maya, the beautiful maid to the princess Tara, the character played by Sarita Choudhury. Through this movie, she got opportunity to work with the veteran actress of Bollywood, Rekha. In 2004, she played supporting role of Kiran in Indian director Gurinder Chadha’s Bride and Prejudice, the lead roles played by Aishwarya Rai and Martin Henderson.

 

She made her television debut the same year through Crucial Tales, where she played the role of Manreet in Episode: "Phoenix". Her role as Roman wife in the first and second season of historical drama series –Rome is her most noticed television work. Game of Thrones is her most recent work in which she played the role of Ellaria Sand. She has also been associated with a few Shakespeare's plays as a stage actress.
