Ibrahim Lodi Biography

Ibrahim Lodi was a Sultan of Delhi in the early 16th century. He was the last ruler of the Lodi dynastythat ruled parts of northern India, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province of present day Pakistan and Punjab.The gloriouswin of Babur in the battle of Panipatis also recorded in the Indian history as the defeat of Ibrahim Lodi, which began the glorious Mughal Empire. Ibrahim was the son of Sikandar Lodi who ruled Delhi from 1489 to 1517 and reconstructed the top two storeys of the QutubMinar.


Ibrahim was an ethnic Pashtun. He ascended the throne in Agra in the year 1517 following his father’s death. Sikander was known as a great administrator and his son could not match with his talents. During his reign, Lodi has to face several rebellions in his empire. He received open threat from Mewar ruler RanaSangramSingh who extended his empire up to western Uttar Pradesh. He also faced threat from the eastern side of his kingdom. He replaced old and senior commanders by less experienced and loyal younger ones, which invited a lot of displeases. 


His Afghan nobility invited Babur to invade India. In 1526, his armed force received a major defeat from Babar and the Battle of Panipat is written in the history book of India. Battle of Panipat was one of the earliest battles involving gunpowder firearms and field artillery. Lodi’s fighting force and war elephants couldn’t withstand Babar’s attack. Ibrahim Lodhi died in the Battle of Panipat and his tomb is situated near the tehsil office in Panipat, close to theDargah of Sufi saint Bu Ali Shah Qalandar, Haryana.
