Hridaynath Mangeshkar Biography

Hridaynath Mangeshkar is a composer and singer from India. He is better known as the brother of Mangeshkar sisters – Lata, Asha, Meena and Usha. Pandit Hridaynath Mangeshkar is the only son of Deenanath Mangeshkar. As a film composer of Bollywood music, his most noted works are Lekin, Mashaal, Lal salaam, Dhanwaan and Maya Meim saab. Lata Mangeshkar won National award for best playback singer for the song, Yaara seeli seeli of Lekin and created a record as the oldest winner in this category. This particular song is regarded as one of the greatest compositions of Hridaynath and he won national awards for best music director the same year as well. Hridaynath debut his music career in 1955 with the Marathi film Akash Ganga. His noted Marathi works include the movies - Sansar, Jait Re Jait, Umbartha and Nivdung. He is also known by the name, Baal. He is married to Bharati Malvankar Mangeshkar, daughter of famous Marathi comedy actor Damuanna Malvankar.

 

Hridaynath was born on October 26, 1937. He is selective in choosing films. Marathi film - Akash Ganga marked his career debut. He often selects beautiful poems for his compositions. He has composed numerous folk songs as well. His composition of Veer Savarkar‘s poem Saagara Pran Talamalala is the best instance. His 1982 album Dnyaneshwar Mauli featured compositions from Saint Dnyaneshwar.

 

Hridaynath was a student of great vocalist, Amir Khan. However he feels Lata is better than Amir Khan. He has won seven Maharashtra State Awards for best vocalist and Music Director and has also won Lata Mangeshkar award for his contributions to Indian music. He was honoured with the title Pandit by Pt. Bhimsen Joshi and Pandit Jasraj. ‘BhaavGandharva’ title was given to him by Sankaracharya. He is also the first Indian composer to compose and release two entire albums consisting of Meera bhai’s works. Those albums were released in the name - Chala Vahi Des and Meera Bhajans.
