Hemendranath Tagore Biography

Hemendranath Tagore was the third son of Debendranath Tagore and elder brother of Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore. His philosophy is the basement of Adi Dharm religion and a part of Brahmoism. He was a constant spiritual companion to his father Debendranath Tagore who founded Brahmoism and notably the first ever Brahmo. He was the grandson of the industrialist Dwarkanath Tagore and the sibling of Dwijendranath Tagore, Satyendranath TagoreJyotirindranath Tagore, Rabindranath Tagore, Birendranath Tagore, and Swarnakumari Tagore, all belonging to the renaissance period of Bengal and who have made valuable contributions in literature, arts, music, religious and social activities as well. Tagore family is one of the prominent families of Bengal. Like his siblings, Hemendranath too had varied interests and was a polymath and scientist of the family. He was a wrestler too and known for his physique. He was an expert in martial arts like judo and ninjitsu.

 

He was born in the year 1844 in Kolkata and died at a comparatively young age of 40 in 1884. He attended the Calcutta Medical College. While studying there, he used to write science articles. Physical science was his chosen topic. He planned to compile and edit into a text book for school students. But his unexpected death at the age of 40 kept the project unfinished. Otherwise it would have been the first attempt in Bengali language. In 1874 he compiled the first scholarly Asian work on physics entitled Prakritik Vijnaner Sthulamarma. He has also acted as an administrator of the whole Tagore family and paid great attention to the education of his younger brothers.  

 

He was the first child born to any of the 21 Brahmos who swore the First Brahmo Covenant on 21 December 1843 at Kolkata. Thus he became the first ever Brahmo. He was responsible for expelling the non-Brahmin workers from Kolkata Brahmo Samaj in 1865. He has started many institutions for women and played a significant role in the establishment of Viswabharathy.
