Hema Malini Biography

Hema Malini is an Indian actress who made her acting debut in 1968. She is also a dancer, director and producer. In a time period of four decades she has acted in more than 150 films. She served as the Chairperson of the National Film Development Corporation.

 

She was born on 16th October 1948 in Ammankudi in Tiruchirappalli. Her parents are V. S. Ramanujam Chakravarthy and Jaya Chakravarthy. She had two elder brothers. She studied at Andhra Mahila Sabha in Chennai. The actors Sanjeev Kumar and Jeetendra wanted to marry her. However she turned down their proposals.

 

She loved the actor Dharmendra and married him in 1980. Dharmendra was already married to Prakash Kaur and so both of them converted to Islam. She has two daughters Esha Deol and Ahana Deol and two step sons Sunny Deol and Bobby Deol. Her daughter Esha Deol is an actress and Ahana Deol is a film director.

 

Her debut film was Sapno Ka Saudagar. She acted in dual roles in the film seta Aur Geeta with Dharmendra and Sanjeev Kumar. She was noted as the dream girl of Bollywood. She gave many successful hits like Sanyasi, Sholay, Pratigya, etc.

 

She acted in movies even after her marriage. She also paired with her husband Dharmendra after their marriage in the films Alibaba Aur 40 Chor, Bhagavat, Samraat and Razia Sultan. She acted with Rajinikanth in the Hindi film Andha Kanoon.

 

Some of the films that she has acted include Jahan Pyar Mile, Sharafat, Abhinetri, Johny Mera Naam, Paraya Dhan, Raja Jani, Gora Aur Kala, Garam Masala, Bhai Ho To Aisa, Seeta Aur Geeta, Hum tere Aashiq Hain, Bandhish, Sharara, Taqdeer, Desh PRemee, Razia Sultan, Rajput, etc. Some of her latest movies are Hey Ram, Censor, Baghban, Veer-Zaara, Baabul, Aarakshan, Tell Me O Khuda, Sadiyaan, Gangotri, Laaga Chunari Mein Daag, etc.

 

She joined Bharatiya Janata Party in 2004. She was elected to Rajya Sabha as the candidate of BJP. She worked for BJP during the elections. She became the general secretary of BJP in March 2010.

 

She received Padma Shri award in 2000. She won the Filmfare Best Actress Award for the film Seeta Aur Geeta and the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award in 1999. She was nominated for the Filmfare Award ten times. She also won Star Screen awards, Zee Cine Lifetime Achievement Award and many other awards.
